An Introduction

Breast Lift Surgery or Mastopexy (also known as breast tightening) is approx 2-3 hours’ procedure which can be performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. You’ll need to wear an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and support your breasts as they heal. You will likely to feel little discomfort in raising your hands, some bruising, swelling and mild pain right after the surgery which will subside in next 5-7 days. The overall social downtime is one week as all the normal office type activities can be resumed after 2-3 days and patient can start light exercise 2-3 weeks after this procedure. It takes 4 to 8 weeks to completely recover & resolve the swelling.

The Ideal Breast Lift Surgery or Mastopexy

The female breast over time ages like any other part of the human body. In the youthful breast, the breast tissue is held up by suspensory ligaments. Over time and with the changes associated with childbirth these suspensory ligaments stretch and the breasts become saggy. The first thing a woman notices when her breasts begin to sag is change in the nipple position. In youth, the nipples point directly forward. With aging, the breast tissue sags and the nipples begin to point downward. The second thing a woman notices is a loss of fullness in the upper part of the breasts. This results in a significant loss of cleavage. Often the woman will resort to underwire bras or other special bras to lift up the breast to reclaim the cleavage that she once had. This is why a breast lift can be so helpful. By regaining proper nipple positioning and cleavage, not only does a woman look more youthful but she feels more youthful. It is common to hear a woman saying that she feels great until she looks at her breasts in the mirror and realizes that they look older and saggier than she feels. The fortunate thing is that this can be remedied predictably and safely with a breast lift.

Are you a good candidate for Breast Lift?

While many women can reclaim their slim waistline after childbirth, no amount of exercise will return their breasts to their pre-pregnancy shape. From pregnancy, breast skin may have stretched and drooped and breast volume may have decreased. Likewise, women who have gained or lost a significant amount of weight may be left with saggy breast tissue. As women age, the skin naturally loses its elasticity, and breasts lose their shape and firmness. Sometimes these conditions may be inherited traits. In certain cases, the breasts may have developed differently so that one breast is firm and well positioned while the other is not. Try the “pencil test” to see if you are a candidate for a breast lift: Place a pencil horizontally along the crease under your breast, where your bra rests. Look in the mirror. Is the position of your nipple (not the areola, the darkened circular area around the nipple) above, at, or below the crease beneath your breast? If it’s below, you would definitely need a lift to restore the breast to a more youthful shape. You may be a good candidate for breast lift / breast tightening surgery if you have one or more of the following conditions :

  • Breasts that lack substance or firmness
  • Breasts that are pendulous, but of satisfactory size
  • Nipples and areolas that point downward, especially if they are positioned below the breast crease.

The Procedure

The procedure always performed under general anesthesia. During pre-operative visits, the doctor and patient may decide on new, usually higher, positions for the areolas and nipples and the desired new size of breast. After your doctor makes the incisions, the underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural, more youthful height. If necessary, enlarged areolas are reduced by excising skin at the perimeter. Excess breast skin is removed to compensate for a loss of elasticity. After your breasts are reshaped and excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is tightened as the incisions are closed. Some incision lines resulting from breast lifts are concealed in the natural breast contours; however, others are visible on the breast surface. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade and significantly improve over time. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. Sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape may be used to close the skin.

“A breast lift can be performed at any age, but plastic surgeons usually recommend waiting until breast development has stopped.”

Your Recovery

The day after surgery, you will be encouraged to get out of bed for short periods of time. After 2-3 days, you should be able to move about more comfortably. Straining, bending and lifting may be avoided, since these activities might cause increased swelling or even bleeding. You may be instructed to sleep on your back to avoid pressure on your breasts. You may notice swelling in your breasts and feel less sensation in the nipple and areola areas. This is usually temporary. Exercise and other strenuous activity can be resumed after one month. Over time, post-surgical swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.

Expected Results

Breast lift surgery will make your breasts firmer and more uplifted. The position of your areolas and nipples will be enhanced, and the size of your areolas will be aesthetically pleasing. The incisions from your breast lift surgery will heal and fade over time. It is important to realize, however, that the incision lines will be permanently visible. In some instances, they will eventually be only faint lines. Certain individuals may have incision lines that are more noticeable. Fortunately, the incisions for your breast lift are in locations easily concealed by clothing, even low-cut necklines. The final results of your breast lift will appear over the next few months as breast shape and position continue to settle. Your mastopexy results will be long-lasting. Over time, your breasts can continue to change due to aging and gravity. But, you’ll be able to retain your new look longer if you maintain your weight and keep a healthy lifestyle.
