Baggy Eyelids Surgery

Home / Services

An Introduction

The surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis and you can go home at the same day of your surgery. The duration of the procedure is 1-2 hours and can be performed under local anesthesia or sedation. You can return back to the normal activities after 5-7 days of your surgery and overall social downtime is 3-4 weeks.

Eyelid surgery can treat :

  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or hides the natural contour of the upper eyelids.
  • Excess fat deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes.
  • Loose and wrinkled skin of lower eyelids

Baggy Eyelids

(Blepharoplasty or Correction of Baggy Eyelids)

As people age, the eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken and fat accumulates around the eyes, causing “bags” above and below the eyes. Both men and women are likely to lose elasticity in the skin around the eyes. Muscles can also begin to relax, causing the lower eyelids to appear baggy. The effect can be worse in some people than others due to hereditary factors, excessive sun exposure or smoking. Having bags under your eyes can make your look older or more lethargic than you truly feel. Eyelid surgery also known as blepharoplasty, is an elective cosmetic surgical procedure that makes you look younger.

Baggy eyelid correction surgery (Blepharoplasty) will help to give a fresher and less tired appearance. One of the most exciting recent advances in aesthetic medicine is the tear trough treatment. However, Blepharoplasty will not remove dark circles under the eyes & crow’s feet around the eyes, which may require addition of other treatment modalities like laser resurfacing or botox. Aesthetic eyelid surgery has the effect of making you look more rested, refreshed and alert as it is a type of cosmetic surgery that alters the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. The aim is to improve the appearance of the area surrounding the eyes.

Are you a good candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

You can consider to have a Eyelid surgery if you have one or more of the below conditions –

  • Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
  • Loose skin hanging down from the upper eyelids, perhaps impairing vision
  • A puffy appearance to the upper eyelids, making the eyes look tired
  • Excess skin and fine, “crepe paper type” wrinkles of the lower eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Lower eyelid droopiness

The Procedure

There are several different techniques for changing the appearance of eyes. For upper lid blepharoplasty an incision is given within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. For lower eyelid blepharoplasty an incision is given either just below the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid. Using these incisions fat is mostly redistributed or sometimes small amount of fat is removed and muscle modified to correct the baggy eyelids in addition to removing excess loose skin. You might consider blepharoplasty if drooping or sagging eyelids keep your eyes from opening completely or pull your lower eyelids down. Removing excess tissue from your upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both can improve vision and make your eyes appear younger and more alert. Blepharoplasty usually takes less than two hours, depending on the amount and location of tissue being removed.

Your Recovery

After your procedure is completed, lubricating ointment and cold compresses may be applied, and in some cases your eyes may be loosely covered with gauze. Since the healing process is gradual & swelling subsides in due course of time, it takes several weeks to give you an accurate picture of the results. Incision scars will fade with time becoming barely visible. The results of eyelid surgery are usually long-lasting but may be affected by heredity and lifestyle factors.

Expected Results

The results of aesthetic eyelid surgery are usually long-lasting, but they may be affected by heredity and lifestyle factors. Redistribution or removal of fat from your eyelids, which is usually the cause of puffiness and bags, is permanent, and these conditions generally will not recur. Patients are usually happy with their appearance for many years following eyelid surgery but some patients find that they want to make additional improvements at a later time as ageing continues. While eyelid surgery can be expected to correct certain conditions permanently, you will continue to age naturally. Life-long sun protection will help to maintain your results.

FAQs

Ques.1: What is the typical downtime for this procedure? Is there any side effects on eye-vision?

Ans. Blepharoplasty surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and you can go home at the same day. The duration of the procedure is 1-2 hours. You can return back to the normal activities from the very next day, there will be mild swelling and bruising around the eye which is nothing to worry about as it will gradually subside. The overall social downtime (for participating in any social gathering or event) is not more than two weeks. Since theprocedure is performed on the coverings (eye-lids) and not on the eye itself, so there is absolutelly no bad effect on your eyes or vision.
